XTC - Apple Venus - Vol.1 (1999)

I finally got to watch the fantastic XTC documentary “This Is Pop” today  via some dodgy streaming service (ok, I was desperate!)

It certainly lived up to my high expectations and reinforced just how brilliant Andy Partridge and Colin Moulder were in creating a consistency of song writing that is only matched by the Beatles.

This record is an example of that quality. It’s right up there with their best records and their best records are at the pinnacle of English rock and pop music.

Do yourself a favour dig through their back catalogue. It’s an unbelievably rich and rewarding treasure trove.

My first encounter with XTC was this record. Aside from the truly iconic cover that grabbed my attention, it was this record that helped me to move from listening to the marginally talented punk/post-punk bands to proper musicians that took risks.

This record is just an embarrassment of riches. I really had forgotten just how brilliant this album is. Not a wasted note from start to finish and at over 70 minutes in length, that’s a big ask.
